Welcome Back Students and Parents!

The Southstage Blog is a good way to stay up to date about what is happening in the Dance and Theater Arts classrooms at SCHS!

Pictures, videos and descriptions of classroom activities are posted here regularly.

This year we are on Facebook. Click here to like our page!

There are a lot of exciting changes this year at South:
    - BYOD Policy (students are allowed to use their own technology in the classroom with teacher consent).
    - Homebase and Powerschool (New ways to organize student information and share it with parents).

This year I am asking my students to create Google Drive accounts and purchase an APP called The Coaches Eye. It's an excellent tool we can use in the classroom for immediate feedback on movement and blocking.

I'm looking forward to seeing returning faces and brand new ones on Monday! Let's have a great year!

Final Exam Projects!!!

Advanced Dance

This project took one week to complete. The students wrote the lyrics to the song (they did not create the instrumental music) and choreographed the hip-hop movement phrasing video clips themselves. The clips were edited using Movie Maker and ProShow Gold.

Spring Concert 2013!

A swing dance performed by the Advanced Dance class in the spring concert at SCHS.

The NC Dept. of Public Instruction includes more than technique (Ballet, Modern and Jazz dance) and craft (the art of choreography) in the dance curriculum. In addition to technical skill development and choreographic design, the curriculum challenges students to learn about dance in different social settings and consider the impact they may have had on society.

This piece is the product of a two week study. My students had no previous instruction/background with swing dance and approached the newly exposed art form with great enthusiasm. They had a lot of fun dabbling in swing dance and were very creative with their choreographic approach.

The small group portions of the choreography were created by the students. They were challenged to use various levels and facings, contrast in time as well as intermediate level dance technique.
